In early September, fans everywhere got the surprise of their lives when it was announced that Keeping Up With the Kardashians is going to be ending after nearly 15 years on the air.
The iconic reality show is responsible for launching Kim Kardashian to fame, as well as her younger sister Kylie Jenner. It has helped the family become some of the most successful people in reality television, launching businesses and building a media empire.
The news of the show ending has caused many fans to ponder how it all started, as well as the possible reasons why the family is finally ready to walk away from it all.
When did ‘KUWTK’ first start?
In 2007, Keeping Up With the Kardashians premiered on the E! network. Few knew of the family at that time, although the Kardashian-Jenners lived in an affluent neighborhood in California. In short order, the show became insanely popular, although it was likely helped along in the early days due to Kim Kardashian’s controversial sex tape.
Viewers have watched the Kardashians grow up on camera and go on to have families of their own — all while continuing to film the reality show that made them famous. From divorces to identity issues, the Kardashians have been through it all, and while there’s little doubt that they appreciate their fan base, the very format and structure of the show has changed a great deal over the years.
The Kardashian-Jenner family has changed a lot over the years
In the early days of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, social media was not as prevalent as it has now become. The family is widely credited with helping to pioneer platforms like Twitter and Instagram, as they have used those platforms relentlessly to try to connect with their followers (and make some money selling various products at the same time).
Still, in a world where people are used to consuming information at the speed of light, Keeping Up with the Kardashians is no longer as groundbreaking as it used to be.
These days, most people learn about big events in celebs’ lives the day they happen. By the time Keeping Up with the Kardashians airs on television, fans usually know all about their latest dramas and events, and no longer count on the show to break news.
In addition, the family has gone through so many changes, both personally and professionally, that the people depicted in the early seasons of the reality show almost seem like total strangers to many fans.
Fans believe that the Kardashians have outgrown ‘KUWTK’
In a recent Reddit discussion, fans theorized why the Kardashian-Jenners finally decided to pull the plug on their famous reality show. One poster stated that “I’m kind of shocked but not really surprised. They all seemed really over it for awhile,” while another said “I think their life is starting to get too real and they want some privacy.”
Multiple posters agreed that the family’s internal changes probably have a lot to do with the show ending, with one fan saying that, “they’re probably just tired of being filmed so much. I think they’ve all matured and kind of grown out of it.”
Some posters stated that while the news is very emotional and that it is almost like the “end of an era,” many of the Kardashian-Jenners will probably continue to stay in the spotlight in some capacity over the next few years.
A few even theorized that the show could end up returning in several years when some of the Kardashian kids are older: “we love a good comeback! And the kids will be older. That’s a solid plan.”
