Mindhunter‘s second season promised a new batch of serial killers, and the Netflix show certainly delivered. In addition to the lead story about the Atlanta Child Murders and Wayne Williams, Mindhunter also features appearances by the BKT Strangler, Son of Sam, and Charles Manson.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of many Manson’s most notorious crimes, specifically the Tate/LaBianca murders, and other TV shows and films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood have featured fictional versions of Manson and his followers. But while most viewers know that Manson and the other members of his “family” were eventually convicted of their crimes, many people don’t know what happened to Manson after he was sent to prison.
Is Charles Manson still alive?
In 1971, Manson was tried and convicted on seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder. He was originally sentenced to death, but his sentence was changed to life in prison with the possibility of parole after California outlawed the death penalty in 1972. He was later convicted on two more counts of first-degree murder.
Manson was denied parole at least 12 times up until 2012, as he was still seen as a danger to the public. He had also incurred about 100 rules violations since his imprisonment in 1971, and they included assault, repeated possession of a weapon, and possession of a cellphone.
In January 2017, it was reported that Manson was gravely ill and suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding. He was rushed to Mercy Hospital and returned to Corcoran State Prison days later. On November 15, 2017, 83-year-old Manson was admitted to the hospital again, and on November 19, it was announced that Manson had died of natural causes in a hospital in Bakersfield, California.
Four months after his death, Manson’s remains were cremated and scattered on a California hillside.
