Model Gisele Bündchen and Tampa Bay Bucaneers quarterback Tom Brady have the perfect relationship on paper — but they certainly weathered a rough patch when Brady’s ex-girlfriend, Bridget Moynahan, announced she was pregnant with Brady’s baby back in 2007. The news blindsided Bündchen, who was newly dating the football star.
“Two months into our relationship, Tom told me that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant,” she wrote in her 2018 memoir, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life (via Entertainment Tonight). “The very next day, the news was everywhere and I felt my world had been turned upside down.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair, she admitted that she’d even considered breaking up with Brady. “You question at times — ‘Should I stay here? Maybe you should work this out,'” she shared. Of course, because Bündchen eventually chose to stay, that fateful decision would forever tie her to Moynahan, the mother of Brady’s child. But just because the two are now fixtures in each other’s lives doesn’t mean they always got along. Here is the untold truth about their complicated (and sometimes rocky) relationship.
Bridget Moynahan drops a bombshell
After the breakup heard ’round the world in December 2006, Bridget Moynahan really gave the tabloids something to talk about with a shocking pregnancy reveal. For Gisele Bündchen, who was blissfully happy with Tom Brady after the pair met through a mutual friend (as Elite Daily reported), the fairytale romance was quickly turning into a nightmare. To be fair, it wasn’t exactly a cakewalk for Moynahan either.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, it was a “traumatic time … it’s golden and it’s tough and it was f***ed up,” she explained. “But now I have a child and it’s the best thing in the world.”
Once she’d had some time to process things, Bündchen similarly looked for the silver lining. Because of the grace with which Brady handled the challenging situation, she came to see “the integrity in him — the way he was a good person through all the times … It made me feel more in love with him; it made me realize who he was,” the supermodel told Vanity Fair.
It’s safe to say Moynahan didn’t share the same opinion, having taken a subtle swipe at Brady when she told People that her ex “was not in the delivery room” when she gave birth to their son.
Gisele Bündchen wasn't interested in getting to know Bridget Moynahan
Vanity Fair revealed that Gisele Bündchen had no interest in getting chummy with Bridget Moynahan — in fact, they’d had zero contact with each other since the arrival of Moynahan’s boy, John Edward (also fondly known as “Jack”).
But while Bündchen didn’t have warm, fuzzy feelings for Moynahan, she certainly had them for Jack! “I understand that he has a mom, and I respect that, but to me it’s not like because somebody else delivered him, that’s not my child. I feel it is, 100 percent,” Bündchen said in the interview. “I already feel like he’s my son.”
Unsurprisingly, Moynahan did not take kindly to this sentiment. A source close to the model and actress revealed to People: “Bridget has her own life, she doesn’t need to be involved in the drama of all this … If Tom is such a great father, he’d ask Bündchen not to use his son as a publicity prop and a subject of public discussion.” Yikes!
How Gisele Bündchen and Bridget Moynahan successfully co-parent
Despite their initial acrimony towards one another, Gisele Bündchen appears to have squashed any bad blood with Bridget Moynahan after marrying Tom Brady and having children of her own. In 2011, Moynahan set the record straight, telling People that “the media creates these dramas, and that’s not what’s happening in my life. My son has two loving parents and an extended family … My son is surrounded by love.”
Bündchen echoed the sentiment in a 2018 interview with People: “I’m so grateful for [Bridget] … I know this was hard but I couldn’t imagine my life without Jack.”
“To raise a son in the healthiest environment, and I know we’ve all done that, and it shows,” added Moynahan in her own interview with the magazine. “I always encourage everyone to stay positive and understand you have to make the kids priority.”
The ladies co-parent well, focusing on Jack’s well-being instead of their own differences. They might never be the best of friends, but they’ve certainly put the past behind them in order to move forward harmoniously for the sake of their blended family.
