“There isn’t any part of his head that thinks, ‘No other president has wanted to do this… probably for a reason,’” MSNBC host tells Seth Meyers
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow joined Seth Meyers on sister network NBC’s “Late Night” on Tuesday and talked about the escalating situation in the Middle East.
Earlier in the day, Iran’s foreign minister said that it will retaliate for the death of General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated by a U.S. drone strike on President Trump’s orders. As Maddow’s interview began, initial reports of an Iranian strike on a U.S. missile base were coming in.
In other words, there was no better time for Maddow to talk about what’s happening in the region and share her hope “that the people in charge really, really thought this through.”
Maddow and Meyers discussed the responsibility Trump’s advisors have when presenting him with ideas and plans, with Maddow noting that from what is known of the president’s nature, “if you offer him a bunch of kind-of normal ideas and one cuckoo-for-Cocoa-Puffs idea, there’s no reason to believe that cuckoo-for-Cocoa-Puffs will seem at all different or less palatable for him.”
“There isn’t any part of his head that thinks, ‘No other president has wanted to do this… probably for a reason,’ and so something like this — that other administrations had considered and rejected as being too risky for American national security — we haven’t had an explanation as to why he thought this was worth it and why he did it now.”
