Duchess Meghan already honored Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy when she wore the designer’s gown on her wedding day. On Monday, the royal presented an even more explicit award.
The Duchess of Sussex made a surprise onstage appearance, alongside scheduled presenter Rosamund Pike, at the British Fashion Awards in London to give Waight Keller the British Designer of the Year Womenswear Award.
“It’s so nice to see so many familiar faces, many of you I’ve known for quite a while and there’s been a lot of you I’ve been able to meet in the last year,” she said to an audience – and designer – who hadn’t planned to see her.

According to Vogue, when Waight Keller took the microphone she said, motioning toward the royal: “I was going to thank you. … Because this woman is so amazing. I got to know Meghan on such a personal level, and to have someone like that trust you in an incredible moment in their life is just such an unbelievable honor and I can’t thank you enough.”
Duchess Meghan has worn plenty of Givenchy designs since becoming Prince Harry’s wife. Onstage, she looked chic in a one-shoulder black Givenchy gown that showed off her expectant belly.
