Just Jane: My new girlfriend hates crazy mate

She was furious and demanded we leave before I’d eaten my banana fritters.

Back at my flat she issued the first of her “him-or-me” ultimatums.

But the other night she went crazy when he turned up at the birthday party she’d organised for me wearing nothing more than a pair of Groucho Marx glasses and a thong.

Now she says she’ll walk away if I don’t start to take her seriously. She wants him out of our lives completely.

She doesn’t want me to see him, speak to him or have any contact whatsoever.

She claims that he sucks the life out of me and makes me look a fool.

Apparently it’s time to grow up and leave childish influences behind us. Is it?

JANE SAYS:

The classic clash between the new girlfriend and the lively mate is as old as time.

You think your friend is funny, clever and warm.

But all your girlfriend sees is a rival for your attention.

She doesn’t think anything about him is endearing.

From what you say, he does sound guilty of winding her up to a certain extent.

Did he really need to take the rise out of her at that Chinese restaurant or turn up dressed like a fool at the party she’d carefully planned for you?

Can you speak to him about toning it down and, at least, attempting to meet her halfway?

After all, you and he are no longer kids.

Equally, talk to your girl and make it clear that you won’t be pushed around or controlled.

You and your pal go back a long way and you have no intention of dropping him.

If you’re to be together, then she needs to understand that you’re a loyal person and that old mates matter.

Just because you’re close to him doesn’t take anything away from your relationship with her.

I can’t believe she doesn’t have a clutch of annoying friends and relatives of her own.
