My daughter's partner will ruin Christmas but she won't come unless he's invited

DEAR DEIDRE: LAST Christmas our younger daughter brought a new boyfriend to our family get-together. She is 25 and he is now 27.

Her older brother and sister were here with their partners and five young children between them, all aged under seven.

Our daughter’s boyfriend behaved horribly and his language got increasingly disgusting the more he drank.

None of us use language like that and eventually our older daughter’s husband objected.

It ended in a horrible row, with children crying and adults shouting.

Now the others say they won’t come to our house this Christmas if this boyfriend is there – unless he apologises.

But our younger daughter only says that’s how he is and insists she won’t come if he’s not welcome.

DEIDRE SAYS: As grim as this pandemic is, the rule of a maximum of three households helps you out.

Tell your younger daughter you are inviting her brother and sister and families so the cousins can play together.

Organise to meet her and her partner for a distanced walk after the Christmas bubble period.

He should stay sober then!
