A new study found that sex with robots is morally fine … if you’re single.
Researchers at the University of Helsinki created two surveys featuring groups of 172 and 260 people. Participants were asked about their morality, relationship history and their experience with science fiction. They were asked to judge two scenarios featuring a man that walked into a brothel featuring real humans or machines.
The study found that regardless of past sexual experiences, respondents were more likely to tolerate people who paid for sex with androids so long as they weren’t married.
And participants who had more sexual experience were more open-minded when it came to going to a bordello, whether it contained machines or real life escorts.
“The more you start thinking about it as something that could compete against or interfere with your relationships, that seems to be what people morally object to,” Tom Arnold, a research associate at Tufts University and co-author of the study, told The New Scientist. He also noted that participants thought of sex robots as just another sex toy that people use.
This study comes after news that sex doll brothels are popping up around the world, and perhaps soon, the U.S. In October, Houston authorities blocked an attempt to open the first brothels featuring sex dolls.
