As you’ve probably noticed if you have an internet connection, Prince William and Kate Middleton are currently married and have three very cute children. But these two started dating in college, and as anyone who’s been through that whole ~thing~ knows, college dating is full of drama—and Kate and William were no exception.
According to a biography by royal expert and frequent Vanity Fair contributor Katie Nicholl, William called Kate during Christmas 2006 and canceled his plans to visit her family, leaving her “tearful.” Which, like, yeah, wouldn’t you be tearful if your boyfriend/girlfriend last-minute canceled your holiday plans together? UGH.
Per Nicholl’s reporting, “at the last minute William had a change of heart and decided to stay with his own family instead.” So he went ahead and “informed a tearful Kate during a late-night conversation on Boxing Day.” Wow. Bad form.
Apparently this convo was “no big deal” to William, but Kate viewed it as a “sign of something more sinister to come.” HOWEVER, this story has a happy ending because the pair obviously got married in 2011. Clearly things worked out!
