The £18 Asda showstopper and a dozen more supermarket party crackers that’ll cost less than the turkey
- Jess Wood picked out the best fashion items from UK supermarkets for parties
- She recommends elevating your outfit by pairing with designer accessories
- British style expert also suggests going up a size, as clothes can appear skimpy
Confession time: my favourite-ever skirt is from Sainsbury’s. It’s a bright, abstract-print number with contrasting black striped flouncy hem, from a Tu collection designed by Graduate Fashion Week winner Jenni Healy.
It makes me feel like Carmen Miranda — for just £7.20. Inverted snobbery has seen the fashion pack mixing charity shop finds with designer pieces for years now. But can you sparkle through Christmas party season in outfits that cost less than the turkey? In a word: yes.
Nowadays, we all think before splurging, and supermarkets have seized on this. It helps that Tu’s sponsorship of Graduate Fashion Week has seriously upped its fashion cred, with clothing from award winners (like my skirt). Tu clothing sales for the past quarter were up 3.3 per cent on 2018, and partywear jumped 56 per cent year on year.
Jess Wood picked out a selection of the best supermarket fashion items this festive season including, Dress, £25, George at Asda; Jacket, £45, and trousers, £24, Tu at Sainsbury’s
Sequin dress, £35, F&F at Tesco
And it’s not just womenswear. There are plenty of supermarket gems for the man in your life, too. The UK’s first supermarket fashion brand was George at Asda, launched in 1990. It’s now a treasure trove of pieces such as this silver sequined slip dress (above left) — by candlelight, if you told me it was Ganni, I’d believe you.
My tips for supermarket fashion? Go up a size, as the cut of cheaper clothes can be skimpy. Elevate your outfit with luxurious accessories, such as a designer clutch or heels and expensive-looking jewellery. I’ll be going for F&F’s sequin mini-dress. That’ll keep Anna Wintour guessing.
