Anthony and Joe Russo aka the Russo Brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame, a film that’s broken countless box office records, have completed their own journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) alongside superheroes Steve Rogers or Captain America (Chris Evans), Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Tony Stark or Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) to name a few.
Like the actors who embodied superheroes in the MCU for what may have totaled more than a decade, the directors spent a great deal of time immersed in all things, Marvel.
“We’ve made four Marvel movies in six and a half years and grossed billions of dollars,” Joe Russo told Esquire during a joint interview with his brother in April when Avengers: Endgame hit theaters. “That’s a unique circumstance for filmmakers,” he added.
The Russo Brothers not only directed Avengers: Endgame but they directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
Now that Marvel Studios has completed their Avengers movie franchise — 22 movies in all — the Russo Brothers have been looking forward to what’s next for them. But will the future include the MCU? Ahead, learn what the directing duo said what it would take for them to direct another Marvel movie after the massive blockbuster that’s Avengers: Endgame.
What it’d take for the Russo Brothers to direct another Marvel movie
During a recent interview with SyFyWire about their next project after Avengers: Endgame (they’re directing an R-rated film called Mosul about an elite Iraqi police force), the Russo Brothers revealed what it would take for them to direct another Marvel movie.
Joe Russo said he and his brother really enjoyed telling stories over the course of a number of movies instead of telling an entire story in one movie when they directed four movies for Marvel Studios.
“I think after you go on the journey that we went on – because there is a comprehensive narrative, an overarching story from Winter Soldier [Captain America: The Winter Soldier] all the way to the end of Endgame [Avengers: Endgame] that involves Tony and Cap, through Civil War [Captain America: Civil War], through Infinity War [Avengers: Infinity War] – I think that scale of ambition in storytelling is a bug that’s bit us,” he said.
“And we’re compelled to tell more stories on that scale, with that sort of years-long ambition to them,” he added.
So, that means if the Russo Brothers sign on for another Marvel movie, it’s likely going to be another series of films — maybe not as lengthy as the Avengers franchise — but a franchise nonetheless.
Joe Russo also said they may return to the MCU if they got the opportunity to direct their favorite superheroes growing up.
“I grew on up [John] Byrne’s X-Men run. Ben Grimm was a favorite character growing up, the Thing. And Fantastic Four is now in the Marvel fold. There’s a lot,” he said before adding, “Silver Surfer is an amazing character. Going really big in cosmic would be a lot of fun. So there’s a lot of things that could attract us.”
There you have it. The Russo Brothers just might return to the MCU to direct films if they 1) have a large “scale of ambition in storytelling” and 2) involve X-Men and/or Fantastic Four.
