Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby made 36 saves Friday night to stymie the Buffalo Sabres in a 2-1 win.
But it was his second-period maneuver that had everybody talking.
Channeling both a baseball player and Hockey Hall of Famer Dominik Hasek, Holtby came charging out of his net to disrupt a breakaway attempt by Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Then he had the presence of mind to knock the puck away from Buffalo forward Conor Sheary at the blue line and reach out with his stick and deflect Sheary's follow-up shot over the glass.
"Since Hasek hasn't been in the league, you don't see that too often," Holtby told reporters.
He said the key is to be able to read the play and judge when to rush out aggressively.
