Wayne Rooney’s American odyssey took another turn on Wednesday evening when he was shown a straight red card during DC United’s defeat by New York Red Bulls.

The former England captain was given his marching orders in just the 24th minute when VAR intervened following a corner kick.

Footage was reviewed by the referee following a coming together between the 33-year-old and Venezuelan midfielder Cristian Casseres, who was left in a heap in the United penalty area.

Referee Ismail Elfath reviewed the footage on one of the big screens inside Audi Field and subsequently reached for his red card, indicating to one of Rooney’s team-mates that Rooney had intentionally thrust his arm towards Casseres’s head.

It’s the second red card of Rooney’s DC United career, after he was shown a red card during the defeat by LA FC in April.

On that occasion, VAR was also used for the sending off, Rooney originally shown a yellow card before the official was urged to review his initial decision.

In Rooney’s absence, United went on to lose an ill-tempered game 2-1, with Amro Tarek also receiving his marching orders following a second bookable offence before the break.

It is the second flash point involving the former Manchester United star since he announced his decision to quit the MLS at the end of the current season.

Rooney makes his way off the pitch, the second red card he has received since his US move

Rooney was involved in a foul-mouth outburst last week during United’s defeat by Vancouver Whitecaps, where he screamed at one of the officials on the side of the pitch.

Substituted during the game, he could be seen getting into the official’s face before repeating ‘every f***ing game’ as he left the pitch.

He also posted a message on Twitter complaining about the travel schedule undertaken by the players in the USA.

Rooney is set to join Derby County in a player-coach role in January.

However, the move has come under fire, with betting company 32Red part-subsidising it.

The striker will wear the number 32 on the back of his top, a move that was described as a ‘very craft move’ by sports minister Nigel Adams.

Other MPs, NHS Physhologists and the Church of England have all spoken out against the partnership.
