As the week kicks off, Jean wonders about whether or not she should ask Ian – who she’s been seeing since last month – out on a date.
After some encouragement from Kat, Jean meets Ian for lunch, but as she tries to flirt with him, it’s clear his mind is elsewhere.
The date takes a bad turn and things go awry when Ian ends up accidentally offending Jean.
Soon it becomes clear what’s eating Ian – but what is it? And has he messed up his chance of romance with Jean?
It was revealed last week that Jean – played by Gillian Wright in the BBC soap – will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer later this year and it’s yet to be seen if Ian will be by her side through the ordeal.
In a statement Gillian said: "I’m aware of the impact such stories can have. It’s important that we treat the issue of cancer diagnosis and treatment with huge sensitivity, dignity and respect.
"I hope the story helps awareness of the disease and is supportive to those affected."
EastEnders boss Kate Oates added: "I know an actor of Gillian’s calibre will approach the story with great truth and depth.
"The Slaters are an amazing ensemble family and this story is a completely fresh subject for them to tackle. I know they will do it justice and raise awareness of such an important issue that affects so many people."
