Ellen DeGeneres's show guest shares experience behind-the-scenes

A guest of Ellen DeGeneres’s show has claimed the host ‘snapped’ out of her ‘kind’ character when the cameras stopped, in the latest allegation to be levelled at the long-running series.

Recently more people who worked on the show have stepped forward with claims of a ‘toxic’ environment behind the scenes, following an expose by BuzzFeedNews, while yesterday a former camera assistant compared the vibe on the show to The Devil Wears Prada.

Over the past few weeks, The Ellen DeGeneres Show has faced allegations of intimidation and racism, with the host being urged to take accountability, as 10 workers recently shared their experiences. In coming forward, the employees also stressed their allegations were against the show and not Ellen herself, but they did insist the host needed to take more responsibility on set.

Now Dana Dimatteo, who appeared on the series in 2018, has shared her experience of being on the programme, claiming Ellen’s demeanour was all for show.

The 29-year-old told The Sun Online: ‘During commercial breaks, Ellen would break out of her ‘kind’ character and sit moodily in silence on her couch, not acknowledging anyone.

‘She didn’t say one word to the audience unless the cameras were on, she snapped out of her character the second the cameras stopped rolling.’

Dana also alleged producers warned her and her friend, who had flown from Chicago to LA for the taping, ‘not to be funnier’ than the host.

She said: ‘We were told by the producers that if we were picked we were not allowed to be funnier or smarter than Ellen, that she is the star and the comedian, not us.’

The guest went on: ‘We were told to act in a very specific way and to only speak if she asked us a question.

‘They made us scream and jump around backstage as a test, it was pretty humiliating.’

All in all, her time on the show wasn’t enjoyable, with Dana claiming guests ‘have to clap constantly and laugh at things that aren’t funny’.

After the recent allegations came to light, Ellen penned an apology, where she said she takes ‘full responsibility’ for the working environment at The Ellen Show, as her name is the brand.

She claimed she had no idea what had gone on behind-the-scenes and is now working with WarnerMedia to get rid of the ‘toxic’ environment.

‘I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect,’ she said according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Following the claims, many celebrities have supported the star, with Ellen receiving public praise from the likes of Katy Perry, Scooter Braun, Ashton Kutcher and Alec Baldwin.

Wife Portia de Rossi has also publicly shown her support for Ellen and shared an Instagram post reading: ‘I stand by Ellen,’ to her page, while thanking fans for their support.
