Grey’s Anatomy will soon be returning with season 17 after the 16th outing of the show ended early. However, looking beyond the new outing, some viewers are curious about whether the series is set to keep on airing, and whether Ellen Pompeo’s potential exit would change what happens next.
Will Grey’s Anatomy be cancelled if Ellen Pompeo leaves?
As fans of medical drama Grey’s Anatomy will know, Ellen Pompeo is one of the show’s original stars.
She has appeared in 16 seasons of the ABC show so far and will soon return for the 17th outing.
However, some fans have been left wondering what her plans are for her future on the medical drama.
So far, the show has not been renewed for season 18 and Pompeo has not renewed her contract.
This could potentially impact the future of the drama as ABC president Kathy Burke has previously revealed how the star is essential to the show.
According to Deadline, she said back in January: “Grey’s Anatomy will live as long as Ellen [Pompeo] is interested in playing Meredith Grey.”
However, this all being said, ABC is also seemingly laying the groundwork for the show to continue despite no announcement yet from Pompeo.
According to TV Line, back in July three of Pompeo’s co-stars all lined-up new deals.
Kevin McKidd, Camilla Luddington and Kim Raver have signed on for contracts which would see them through a potential Season 19.
This seemingly implies the future of the show is being shaped right now.
Although nothing official has been announced by ABC or Pompeo yet.
Things do look good for the possibility of the Meredith Grey star returning however.

This comes after Pompeo recently opened up about why she has stayed on Grey’s Anatomy for so long.
She told Jemele Hill’s Unbothered podcast: “If I started the show when I was younger, [like] 25, I probably would have dipped out when I was 31, 32, when my six-year contract was up.
“I knew coming up on 40, it’s like, I don’t want to be out there chasing [film roles]… begging. I’d rather just see this as the blessing that it is.”
She then added: “I [now] have this great husband and these three beautiful children, so to have a happy home life was really something I needed to complete, to close the hole in my heart.
“And so I made a decision to make money, and not chase creative acting roles.”
This could definitely mean she has plans to continue on appearing in the series.
As soon as any more about the drama’s future is revealed, Express.co.uk will keep viewers updated.
Grey’s Anatomy season 17 is expected to be released later in 2020.
