Alice Braga stars as wealthy drug mogul Teresa Mendoza in the exciting crime thriller Queen of the South. As fans wait for the new instalment to drop on the USA Network and Netflix, a live chat with the show’s star has teased a new relationship in season five.

Queen of the South may be the latest drama set against the backdrop of Mexico’s dangerous drug cartels, but there is occasionally time for moments of romance for Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga).

Many fans thought sparks could start flying again between Teresa and her ex-boyfriend James (Peter Gadiot) when he made his unexpected return in the season four finale.

Although James was absent for most of season four, he surprisingly returned in the final moments of episode 13, They Come For You.

James appeared clutching a severe gunshot wound to his abdomen, and finally made sense of the episode’s title by warning Teresa that someone was after her.

Despite his reappearance setting the stage for yet another exhilarating chase across Mexico for season four, some fans have speculated the former lovers could rekindle their failed romance.

Moreover, an unearthed live chat on Alice Braga’s personal YouTube channel has hinted towards Teresa starting another relationship with a new character in season five.

One of Alice’s fans asked: “Can we expect a full season relationship for Teresa?”

Teresa has had a series of relationships throughout the series, most notable with James and Guero (Jon Decker), though none have ended well.

The Queen of the South star ruminated on the idea and explained, while it could happen, a new relationship is unlikely to end well in Teresa’s dangerous line of work.

Alice explained: “It’s hard, I mean it’s a very lonely life.

“I think throughout the seasons we learn with Guero, with James that it’s not a business where you can have a relationship.”

As demonstrated by the gripping season finale, Teresa’s relationship with James has put her ex-boyfriend directly in the line of fire during her ongoing feuds with other Mexican cartels.

Moreover, fans were crushed when her other boyfriend Guero, introduced in the series Pilot, died resting on her lap near the end of season three after enduring eight months of torture.

Guero frequently proved his loyalty to Teresa, especially when he is kidnapped by Camila (Verónica Falcón) and Cortez (Yancey Arias), but refuses to give information of her whereabouts.

The series lead also touched on whether Teresa could start a family and admitted it was unlikely thanks to her proximity to danger.

Alice referenced Teresa’s relationship with her godson Tony (Adolfo Alvarez and Julian Silva), whom she raised following the death of his parents.

She said: “We’ve seen what happened with Tony, so let’s see. I think she will still try, but I don’t know. It’s hard.”

Teresa’s career frequently put Tony into danger, making her reluctant to start a new relationship and have children of her own.

Furthermore, her concerns were proven to be rational when Tony is tragically killed in an explosion near the end of season four.

The star’s comments confirmed a new relationship isn’t impossible, but Teresa will have to tread very likely to make a new romance work going forward into season five.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
