Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) has made a lot of mistakes as a mum and part of her problem is that she often uses the ‘tough love’ approach in the least appropriate moments in EastEnders.
Since being forced to revisit his past, where he was abused by careworker Katy Lewis, Mick has rebuilt his resentment of Shirley, partially blaming her for everything he went through growing up.
Shirley has no idea that Mick was abused by Katy or of his connection to Frankie (Rose Ayling-Ellis) and she has been confused by his recent low moods, putting them down to his anxiety disorder.
But tonight, as he snapped at her again, she lashed out at him, yelling for him to stop playing the victim – little knowing that he has been the victim of some serious abuse.
She told him that people like Gray were suffering huge losses compared to him and effectively urged him to ‘man up’ – a very unhelpful approach when dealing with a male suffering mental health problems.
Shirley could see she had cut Mick deep – but will she admit that she was wrong as guilt overwhelms her?
And how will she react when she learns the truth about Mick’s low mood?
