At Star Wars Celebration, it was revealed that Star Wars: Episode IX’s official title is The Rise of Skywalker.
The title was revealed alongside a teaser trailer that ended with the return of a character we were not expecting.
Alongside the trailer, we also got our look at the first poster for Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.
The reveal of the trailer and name ended the Star Wars Celebration Episode IX panel that saw director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy joined by the cast of The Rise of the Skywalker, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, Joonas Suotamo, and Naomi Ackie.
The panel also introduced the world to the newest droid in the Star Wars universe, Dio, who is described as being a friend of BB-8.
We were also shown images of each of the characters on stage in Episode IX, including Billy Dee Williams back as Lando Calrissian, and it was confirmed that Luke’s Lightsaber “lives” in The Rise of Skywalker.
The newest cast member to The Rise of Skywalker, Naomi Ackie, was revealed to portray Jannah, who may or may not be Lando Calrissian’s daughter.
Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, will be released in theaters on December 20, 2019, and Abrams discussed a bit about how they “built scenes around” Carrie Fisher’s unused footage for the film and that this newest entry in the Skywalker Saga does not pick up immediately after The Last Jedi.
