Steve Blackman Reveals His Favorite Scenes From 'The Umbrella Academy' Season 2

Fans of The Umbrella Academy undoubtedly have a favorite scene from the show’s latest installment. As the showrunner, you might think it would be hard for Steve Blackman to choose a favorite scene — but he did! Discover which scenes from season 2 of The Umbrella Academy are Blackman’s favorites.

[SPOILER ALERT: Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 2 ahead.]

Steve Blackman opened up about season 2 on Reddit

The Umbrella Academy fans were overjoyed when Blackman hosted an Ask Me Anything forum in August 2020. With the release of season 2, fans had several questions they wanted answered.

From how he chooses the music for the series to why they cast Aidan Gallagher for Number Five’s role, Blackman was an open book. When one fan asked which sequence or character moment was Blackman’s favorite, he had more than one answer.

Steve Blackman loved the visual effects in ‘Battle Dallas’

One of Blackman’s favorite parts of The Umbrella Academy Season 2 was the opening sequence. “It was an amazing undertaking,” Blackman said on Reddit.

For one, the only real things in the entire sequence are the actors, some debris and a tank. Everything else is VFX — computer-generated graphics. The actors and the crew were in a huge green volume (basically a boxed set of green sheets hanging from rails) outside. Sylvain, our director, told the actors what the viewers would be seeing when it was completed and they acted accordingly.

All toll, Blackman said it took five days and nights to get the scene right. “It was [filmed] in the hottest part of the summer,” he added. Regardless, the scene looked incredible!

Diego’s epic fight scene was another one of Steve Blackman’s favorites

In episode 4 of season 2, “The Majestic 12,” Diego (David Castañeda), Five, and Lila (Ritu Arya) visited the Mexican consulate in the hopes of finding Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).

When the Swedes sent on behalf of the Commission to preserve the timeline arrived, an epic fight broke out in the halls. This fight scene was another one of Blackman’s favorite moments in season 2.

“I loved this sequence for so many reasons,” Blackman explained.

“First of all, David Castañeda did ALL his own stunts. Amazing, right? He practiced his martial arts and fighting skills [in] his free time between season 1 and 2. David was exhausted when it was done, but exhilarated!”

Fans were pleased with Castañeda’s performance. “David really brought his all for the stunts this year and it was amazing!” one fan wrote.

Castañeda’s fighting skills weren’t the only thing Blackman was impressed by shooting that scene.

“We built that hallway on [the] set and [placed] the camera outside the windows to give the impression we were floating by the window as David and the stuntman fought their way from one side of the hallway to the other,” Blackman added.

Blackman’s decision to film the fight sequence in that way made for one of the most artistic shots in season 2. Like Blackman, many fans had nothing but good things to say about it. “That hallway fight scene is one of my favorites!” another fan replied.
