Who will be playing Harold Wilson in The Crown season 3?

Actor Jason Watkins will be stepping into the historic shoes of prime minister Harold Wilson for the Netflix show.

He has appeared on a number of well known shows and dramas over the years so is probably recognisable to many.

Watkins has featured in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Conviction, The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle, Wired and Sky One comedy series Trollied.

This is the first time he has appeared in a Netflix Original show.

But he has admitted filming parts of the series was personally difficult for him.

Following the death of his daughter Maude, Watkins struggled filming scenes on Aberfan, where more than 100 children were killed in 1966 in a landslide.

Speaking on Lorraine, Watkins said: “It’s an incredibly moving film, each episode is a film in itself, we filmed not far from Aberfan.

“The care and attention that was taken by everyone in production.

“And people probably know I lost a child, me and my wife Clara lost Maude in 2011, so to go and have an episode about the loss of a child was very difficult.

“And I think I suppose above anyone else wanted to make it in the right way.

“It helps us to remember what happened… I’m very proud to be part of that, no matter how difficult it was.”

Wilson, a British Labour politician, served as prime minister from 1964 to 1970 after Hugh Gaitskell, then Labour leader, died suddenly in 1963 and Wilson was elected leader.

He then served a second term as prime minister from 1974 to 1976.

Historians have noted the Queen’s relationship with Wilson was of great significance as he didn’t come form a ruling class background so opened her eyes.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Colman said: “I think she’s a leftie, but I think what’s extraordinary and wonderful about her, she can be everything to anybody.

“Whatever you want her to be, she sort of is. I want her to be a leftie and think she is because she loved Harold Wilson.”
