The Last Kingdom is a popular historical drama series on Netflix which is based on a series of novels called The Saxon Stories. The series follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) and the latest season stars two of his children – Stiorra (Ruby Hartley) and young Uhtred (Finn Elliot). In The Saxon Stories, the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Uhtred has another child, but he does not feature in the series.

Who is Uhtred’s third child?

In the books, Uhtred has another son but fans have noticed he does not make an appearance in the series.

Season four saw Stiorra and young Uhtred take on leading roles, and fans fell in love with their characters who were brave and had big hearts, like their father.

Young Uhtred, who was introduced to Christianity by King Alfred (David Dawson), is still torn between his religious upbringing and his Dane heritage.

Stiorra is very different to her brother as she embraces her Dane roots and is keen to be an independent and free spirit.

Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss what happened to Uhtred’s other child, with Redditor vanderschnitzel saying: “How come there was no mention of Uhtred’s third child in season four? Or did I miss something?”.

Alessia1255 said: “The producer was asked about Uhtred’s youngest son and he said there were too many new characters in S4 so they decided not to include him.

“It seems they’ve merged the two sons into one. When asked about his children, Uhtred mentions Stiorra and his son, not ‘sons’.”

The unnamed child was the son of Uhtred and Gisela (Peri Baumeister) who died in childbirth at the beginning of season three.

The executive producer for the series, Nigel Marchant, took part in a video question and answer session with Radio Times, and the publication addressed the question.

Marchant said it would have been once character too many. He said: “I think we’re always conscious about bringing in new characters – and there’s an awful lot of them within this season – and there’s a lot of younger characters coming in.

“Obviously, we only had 10 episodes and so many hours and so many storylines that we could really push through.”

There is a chance his mystery son will appear later on in the series as Marchant suggested there may be scope to introduce him in the future.

He said: “So there was a conscious decision about who we really wanted and who is propelling the story along. We didn’t want to cheat the audience by not meeting the characters and going on a journey with them.

“There’s a lot of characters in any ensemble piece and that means there’s a lot of mouths to feed for the writer.”

A lot of child actors were introduced to this season, including Aethelflaed’s (Millie Brady) daughter Aelfwynn (Helena Albright) and King Edward’s (Timothy Innes) son Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths).

Marchant said with so many young characters caught up in the action, it would have been one character too many if Uhtred’s son was introduced.

He said, for the most part, the casting did not deviate from the books, and they had hoped to keep the characters as they are represented in the source material.

Sometimes they must change up the storyline in order for the series to work, but he said: “That’s not to say that we couldn’t see them in the future.”

He did say it was difficult to distinguish between so many different tribes and groups, especially with the Welsh King being introduced in the new series.

The crew, including the costume designers, had to work hard to make sure the individual characters and tribes stood out.

  • Last Kingdom: How accurate is The Last Kingdom?

Gisela was introduced in the second season of The Last Kingdom and she was the sister of King Guthred (Thure Lindhardt) of Northumbria.

Uhtred ends up forming a close bond with her and the two are eventually married and have three children, but she dies in childbirth following the third pregnancy.

Gisela had died whilst Uhtred was away, and he returns to find his wife already buried, and fans were left feeling emotional when he was given the news.

Fans have said the youngest child would have been too young to feature in the series but he could have at least been mentioned in passing.

Some viewers even believe the child may have been suddenly killed off, but they hope season five will explain the situation.

The Last Kingdom is available to watch on Netflix now.
