Season two of Netflix’s unique superhero series saw the Hargreeves family jet across time to stop yet another doomsday event. However, when they returned to 2019, their home in The Umbrella Academy wasn’t exactly how they remembered it. One theory has linked the character of Harlan to the mysterious floating cube in the climactic finale.

Vanya Hargreeves (played by Ellen Page) and her dysfunctional family of superheroes returned this year for another thrilling season of The Umbrella Academy.

The quirky sci-fi series saw the kooky group of siblings thrown back in time to the 1960s to evade the Handler (Kate Walsh) and stop another apocalypse.

However, their adventure came to an abrupt end when they returned to their original time to find out their mansion had been given a sinister makeover.

Upon hopping back to 2019, they discovered Reginald (Colm Feore) had adopted a different set of supernatural children dubbed the Sparrow Academy.

Little is known about the creepy new faction, although creator and co-writer of the original comic book Gerard Way will reveal all in the upcoming fourth issue of the series.

Along with the Hargreeves’ new rivals, the Sparrow Academy was flanked by a mysterious floating cube that has baffled even the most perceptive fans.

Some theories have formed a link between the cube and a new character introduced for season two, Harlan Cooper (Justin Paul Kelly).

During her time as an amnesiac nanny for the Coopers, Vanya inadvertently transferred her powerful sonic powers into the young boy.

His newfound abilities led to destructive results and, although Vanya attempted to put things right, Harlan still retained some telekinetic power at the end of the latest season.

When The Umbrella Academy returns, it could be revealed Reginald formed the cube to contain his chaotic abilities.

Fans of the original comic book will remember the cube showing up at the end of the latest issue, Hotel Oblivion.

Although the television adaptation has taken some artistic liberties with the source material, both the next comic book issue and Netflix’s potential third season are expected to feature a dynamic face-off between the Umbrella and Sparrow Academies.

Season three has yet to be confirmed, but things are looking good after the show shot to the top of Netflix’s most popular shows for summer 2020.

Teasing the new issue, writer Gerard Way confirmed there are still plenty of secrets to be revealed within the world of The Umbrella Academy.

He explained: “The series finally starts to answer the question: ‘What about the other babies born on that day, in that moment?’ The Umbrella Academy siblings are not alone in the world anymore.”

Viewers are already expecting a return from Harlan Cooper thanks to a major clue linking him to the Sparrow Academy.

In a scene in the season finale, Harlan is seen exercising his new powers by floating a wooden carving of a sparrow.

Not only could Harlan become a key member of the adversarial team, his sparrow connection and altercations with the Hargreeves may have given Reginald the idea.

Amid coronavirus concerns and the unconfirmed season three, fans will have to wait and see what the game-changing twist could mean for the future of the series.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
