American Murder: The Family Next Door is the latest true crime documentary on Netflix to grip the world.
The documentary focuses on the shocking true story of how a man – Chris Watts – slaughtered his whole family, and the aftermath.
In 2018 Chris Watts confessed to killing his pregnant wife Shannan and his two young daughters.
The pair had met in 2010, married in 2012, and had two daughters together – Bella and Celeste – and had a third child on the way.
But on August 13, 2018, Shannan’s friend Nickole Atkinson became suspicious after she couldn’t get hold of her friend and decided to call Watts and the police.
An investigation was started, and when the police found Shannan’s car and all of her personal belongings, they were officially declared missing.
Watts went from helping the investigation and saying he had no idea where they were – to confessing.
Here Daily Star Online shares what happened to Chris Watts after confessing to the triple murder, and where he is now.
What happened to Chris Watts?
Watts was arrested late on August 15, 2018, after failing a polygraph test and confessing to murdering Shannan.
According to the arrest affidavit, Watts was having an affair and had asked to separate from Shannan before her death.
He told police that Shannan had killed their two daughters in a fit of rage, after he had asked to separate.
However, in November Chris changed his story again – saying he had killed his wife and daughters.
He pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder – including two additional counts for his daughters because they were under 12.

On November 19, 2018, Watts was sentenced to five life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Three of these were to be served consecutively, and two concurrently.
He also received an additional 48 years for unlawful termination of his unborn child, and 36 years for tampering with a deceased body.
Watts had entered into a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty, but this means he will never be released from prison.
At the moment Watts, 35, is in Dodge Correctional Institution, a maximum-security prison in Waupun, Wisconsin.
He was moved there in December 2018 due to “security concerns”.
