The presenter made the awkward blunder during last night's live final of the show – with viewers asking who Dermot was "trying to fool" with the remark.
Speaking to the Liverpudlian finalist after his duet with Tom Walker, Dermot said: "Anthony you're trending on Twitter… In a good way."
However, eagle-eyed viewers were quick to check Dermot's claim and found that this wasn't actually the case.
One fan tweeted: "Anthony isn't trending… I just looked #XFactor".
Another fumed: "I don’t see him trending. #XFactor Where?"
A third added: "Anthony isn't trending, who are they trying to fool?"
Others questioned whether the tweets really were "good", with one cruel troll writing: "Dermot telling Anthony he’s trending on Twitter……..in a good way.
"Best not look at my tweets then Anthony, love."
Last night, Anthony, 28, battled it out with Scarlett Lee and Dalton Harris to be crowned this year's X Factor winner in tonight's live results show.
Both Anthony and Dalton are being mentored by One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, with Dalton, who is favourite to win, duetting with Emeli Sande during last night's show.
Meanwhile, Simon Cowell's finalist, Scarlett, performed with Robbie Williams – with the new judge also expected to rejoin Take That for a special one off performance tonight.
A source previously shared: "Fans have been gunning for Robbie to perform all series and that's finally going to happen.
"He's been a real highlight of this year's show and it was a real feat to get him as a judge, so the medley is going to be a celebration of that."
