Black bear leaps into a tree from the deck of a Smoky Mountains home

Flight cub! Black bear does a stunning leap into a tree after climbing up on to the deck of a Smoky Mountains home

  • Melissa Howell filmed a black bear climbing up onto their wood cabin’s deck
  • The animal is spooked by her and leaps into a nearby tree before sliding down
  • Encounter was captured in Maggie Valley, North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains

A black bear has showed off its jumping skills by leaping from the deck of a mountainside home into a nearby tree.

Melissa Howell captured the moment she spooked ‘Boo Boo’ the bear after he realised he was being watched.

The encounter was filmed in Maggie Valley, part of North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

In the video, the curious black bear is seen scaling the side of the stilted wooden cabin in an effort to get a good view of his surroundings.

The black species of bear are smaller and have much sharper claws than their grizzly cousins, making them superior climbers.

But unknown to the bear, homeowner Melissa is watching a few metres away.

A homeowner recorded her incredible encounter with a black bear who had climbed on to the deck of her wood cabin home in Maggie Valley, part of North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park

When Boo Boo then gets to the top of the ledge, he sees Melissa recording and quickly jumps straight off into a tree, which he expertly descends.

‘When he did see me he casually turned and jumped as if he meant to do that all along,’ Melissa explained.

‘I think Boo Boo just comes for the view. And a little exercise,’ Howell’s husband posted on his Instagram account.
