Dramatic footage captures damage from Hurricane Laura

Dramatic video captured the grim aftermath of Hurricane Laura after it slammed into Cameron, Louisiana, as a Category 4 monster with ferocious 150 mph winds that unleashed widespread flooding and left behind a sea of devastation.

The aerial footage shows inundated neighborhoods littered with battered buildings, downed power lines and toppled trees across a wide swath of the area where the storm came ashore early Thursday.

The footage also shows the storm damage In Orange, Texas, where trees were uprooted and utility poles were torn from the ground.

More than 650,000 people lost power during the onslaught in Louisiana and Texas, according to Reuters.

On the plus side, Laura’s storm surge was much less than initially predicted, sparing major refineries from extensive flooding, officials said.

A dangerous 20-foot storm surge that forecasters had said could move 40 miles inland was avoided when the storm tacked east just before landfall, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said.

As a result, a powerful gush of water was not fully pushed up the Calcasieu Ship Channel, which would have given the storm surge an easy path far inland, Reuters reported.

The storm killed at least six people in Louisiana, including four who were killed when trees fell into homes.

Laura, now a tropical depression, swept through Arkansas on Friday morning and is expected to bring heavy rain to the East Coast over the weekend.
