The surfer bitten by a shark in Hawaii this week, forcing a major competition to be scrapped, has died of his injuries, according to reports.
The 56-year-old Lahaina man had surgery after the shark chomped down on him and his board as he paddled out into Honolua Bay on Tuesday.
He was initially listed as being in stable condition, but died after his condition quickly deteriorated following the surgery, officials confirmed to Hawaii News Now. He has yet to be identified.
The death was also confirmed by the World Surf League (WSL), which had suspended its Maui Pro competition following the attack on the recreational surfer close to where its competitors were due to ride the waves.
“The WSL has learned that Tuesday’s victim of the shark attack at Honolua Bay has tragically passed away,” the organization said on Twitter.
