Picture this: Clear, radiant, glowing skin that’s packed full of hydration — the kind of skin that you usually leave the beauty salon with. Imagine being able to look after your skin so well that you’re able to achieve this on a daily basis.
According to Byrdie, the 7 skin method will give you the gorgeous, glowing skin that you’ve been dreaming of. It’s the hottest new Korean beauty hack and it’s easy to see why — the results speak for themselves.
Beauty bloggers across Korea have been hyping up this skincare treatment across their channels, showcasing just how incredible the results can be. Believe it or not, this skincare craze stems from toner — a.k.a. the Marmite of the beauty world.
Glamour shares that Ada Ooi, founder of 001 Skincare, says, “Toner has had a bad reputation for not contributing anything to a skincare routine. Since double cleansing has boomed, it leaves even less room for toner but I’ve been trying to push for a toner renaissance since 2015.”
That’s why Ooi is backing the newest Korean skincare craze, as it involves using a selection of seven different toning products to refresh and revive the skin post-cleansing.
How does the 7 skin method work and how can you do it at home?
As per Allure, the 7 skin method is simply the process of using a toning product to your face seven times. Toner should be applied straight after cleansing but before moisturizing. Young-Ji Park, the founder of Korean skincare brand Purple Tale explains that the reason the process is called the “7 skin method” is because in Korea toners are referred to as skins.
According to Byrdie, when you usually apply toner — or any skincare product — it takes time for your skin to absorb the product. The product sits on top of the skin and doesn’t get properly absorbed, as the majority evaporates. However, by layering your toner you allow the skin the chance to absorb a layer of the toner, which means that on a technical level more of the product can be absorbed.
Glamour explains that Ada says it’s perfectly fine to use just one toner or seven toners — you can either use one toner type or a combination of different formulations, “depending on your skin.”
When it comes to how to use toner as part of the 7 skin method, it’s best to squeeze a small amount of toner into the palm of your hand, applying to the skin using gentle tapping and patting movements. This should help to soften the skin and increase the amount of water in the epidermis. This process should be repeated seven times.
