This TikTok hairbrush cleaning hack could explain why your hair gets greasy

TikTok has taught us so many things when it comes to beauty hacks – from curling our hair with a dressing gown tie to the quickest ways to nail winged liner.

Every week another nifty trick pops up on the platform, often saving us time and money – and helping us understand the beauty world a little more.

The latest one is all about the humble hairbrush.

And it could provide some much-needed answers, like why hair can get greasy even after washing?

TikTok creator @everything_tidy decided to investigate how much dirt  hairbrushes have on them.

In her clip, she explains that she heard from a woman on TikTok that hair can get greasy or oily quickly not only because of hair follicles, but due to the dirtiness of a hairbrush.

She says: ‘So I’m gonna put that to the test. I’ve put all my brushes in the sink and we’re gonna leave them for a bit. I’ve used hot water and shampoo because she [the online woman] didn’t state what she used – I figured because it’s hair.’

After putting her hairbrushes into the water to soak, she returns to the sink to inspect the water – only to find that it’s turned a murky brown colour.

She adds: ‘So I’ve left them for an hour and come back to check the water… oh my god, that’s disgusting.

‘Ladies, don’t forget to wash your hairbrushes. I didn’t even know that was a thing, but look at the state of that.’

It’s safe to say that people have been horrified by the results of her experiment.

Someone replied: ‘Noooooooo way!! I need to do this tomorrow.’

Another added: ‘Omg I’m buying a new hairbrush and starting from scratch.’

While others have been shocked that people are unaware of this cleaning method.

One person said: ‘If you wash your hair, why wouldn’t you wash your hairbrush, she can’t be serious.

Another individual replied: ‘This confuses me that people didn’t know this. It’s the same as washing your makeup brushes.’
