David Beckham and his wife Victoria are two of the world’s most iconic celebrities, known respectively for their own careers – David, 46, as a world class footballer, and Victoria, 47, as one fifth of girlband, Spice Girls and now top designer – and as the strong married couple that forms the ‘Beckham brand’.
Whilst these days, they’re known for their impeccable sense of style, it wasn’t always so, as David recently reflected on his fashion faux pas at their 1999 wedding which was exclusively covered by OK! – ahead of his son Brooklyn, 23, and fiancé Nicola Peltz’s nuptials this weekend.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the father-of-four spoke fondly of meeting Victoria and their subsequent marriage, but he admitted he regrets the matching purple outfits that the couple wore at their wedding reception.
The ex-Manchester United ace said: “Victoria’s was nice,” before adding: “I looked like one of the guys out of Dumb and Dumber when they went to that party. I even had a top hat. Unbelievable. What was I thinking? … It was the thing to do around that time.”
Revealing that he first set eyes on Victoria when she was in a music video with the Spice Girls when she was wearing a sexy black catsuit, David said that it was the then-Spice Girls manager, Simon Fuller who set up their fateful meeting inside Manchester United’s player’s lounge.
He said: "She was obviously there for a reason, and I was hoping that I was that reason, and apparently I was.
“She had a couple glasses of white wine, and I saw my opportunity while she was slightly tipsy. I spoke to her for 25 minutes and I got her number. So it worked.”
David and Victoria are the proud parents of four children, sons Brooklyn, 23, Romeo, 14, Cruz, 11, and Harper, 5.
Reflecting on what it takes to make a marriage work, David said: “We’ve got strong parents.
“We were brought up with the right values. Of course, you make mistakes over the years. We all know marriage is difficult at times, and it’s about working through it. Whenever we’ve come up against tough times, we know each other better than anybody knows us. We have an amazing life which we are very respectful of. We are also private people.”
Son Brooklyn is set to marry his fiancé Nicola Peltz, 27, in a star-studded £3million ceremony in Florida on Saturday.
A star-studded Hollywood guest is expected, as fans have already seen Gordon Ramsay and his family arrive in Miami after jetting over the pond.
The wedding is taking place at Nicola's family estate in Miami, Florida, worth $76million.
The palatial beach-side estate is owned by Nicola's dad Nelson Peltz, who is a billionaire American financier and investor and it features 27 bedrooms, beautifully-kept gardens and incredible views of the Miami coast.
