Ellie Goulding has previously been open about her struggle with "paralysing anxiety" and now, the star has said her issues spiralled after she rose to fame at the young age of 24 years old.

Frankie Bridge asked Ellie, 34, on her podcast Open Mind: "You’ve said in the past that you struggle with paralysing anxiety.

"Is that something that started from a young age? Or was that something that developed as you got older?"

Responding to the ex-Saturdays singer, Ellie explains: "I don’t remember having it when I was younger.

"It’s possible that I did. I just maybe didn’t interpret it in the right way or I thought that was just who I was; whereas I’ve been able to unpick things a lot more now as I get older."

She went on to explain how she feels her anxiety build up in a "physical" way.

"I think the first time that it became a physical thing was when I started out in music and it all happened so bloody quickly that I couldn’t catch up with what was going on… my brain couldn’t catch up with my body or the other way around," Ellie continued.

The Anything Can Happen hitmaker went on to describe her first anxiety attack, which took place as she was travelling to her father's funeral.

Ellie explained: "I was on a train, going to my friend’s dad’s funeral, sadly, and I was going back through where I grew up and I remembered the old person that I was and it hadn’t caught up with this new person that I was trying to make myself as a recording artist, and I think it just completely crashed.

"And just at that moment the train broke down and it was just this coming together of things where it came out in this massive panic of, well I was sweating, and my heart was pounding and I was having palpitations and I had these feelings of dread – which made me think I’m going to die.

"I was like, 'Is this death? Is this dying?', because that’s how severe it was as a physical reaction."

Ellie's comments come as she and husband Caspar enjoyed a date night at the London Fashion Week party in partnership with Swarovski.

The star wore an edgy jacket with a white cami top underneath, while Caspar wore a shirt and smart trousers with a jacket.

The singer-songwriter recently spoke of her anxiety and her addiction to exercise in her new book Fitter. Calmer. Stronger. which is set to be released later this month.

In the book, she writes: "My low days used to be ridiculously low. I just couldn't find a way out of them. I often felt as if I was failing because when I felt down I wasn't being productive.

"My voice, my music and writing will always be my mysterious, unpredictable, fiery friend for life.

“But even if I write something I love, I can't always rely on it to make me feel good. I often write my best songs when I'm feeling miserable.”

Ellie said she often felt “complete euphoria and utter terror” simultaneously after being thrust into the spotlight as she was finishing university.

The blonde star revealed her sudden fame was like being “strapped to a space shuttle” as she could be travelling to “three different countries in one day”.

She also found herself eating poorly as she always thought she could burn off any extra calories with exercise.
