Hugh Grant said Robert Downey Jr ‘wanted to kill him’ in decades-long feud

Hugh Grant reveals he and his wife both had coronavirus

Hugh Grant once claimed Robert Downey Jr “hated” and “wanted to kill” him after a tempestuous time filming the 1995 film, Restoration.

The Bridget Jones star, who turns 63 today, said in a 2018 interview: “He hated me. He took one look at me and wanted to kill me.”

When asked why, Hugh added to PEOPLE: “I don’t know! I was so hurt, he just did!”

Robert, 58, did not deny their strained relationship, saying years earlier that he thought the Notting Hill actor was “a d**k”.

He stated, as reported by MailOnline: “I just thought he was a d**k, that’s all. And I still do.

“You know, and that could be something that has to do with me, or it could just be that not everyone in this industry is someone I’d care to hang out with.”

The pair have now made amends as Robert offered to “bury the hatchet” after hearing Hugh’s comments.

In January 2018, the Iron Man star tweeted: “A lot has happened over two decades!

“I respect how Mr. Grant has matured as an artist and voice against violations of privacy. Let’s break bread together soon @HackedOffHugh! #burythehatchet2018.”

Hugh accepted Robert’s olive branch, even inviting him to stop by to “break bread”.

The father-of-five wrote: “Thanks, @RobertDowneyJr. Nice way to kick off the year.

“And yes – if you’re in London come by and break bread. Won’t be easy as my 5-year-old bakes it, but you seem strong. Respect. #burythehatchet2018.”

Hugh shares three children with his wife, TV producer Anna Elisabet Eberstein, 40.

They first welcomed their son, John Mungo Grant, 11, in September 2012. Their daughter, whose name remains unknown, was born in 2015, and their third child arrived in 2018.

Hugh also shares two children with his ex, Tinglan Hong; Tabitha, 12, and a son named Felix born in December 2012.

The BAFTA winner previously said becoming a father was “the nicest thing that’s ever happened” to him.

He continued to PEOPLE: “It’s just lovely to have all that love around. Suddenly you love someone more than yourself. It’s unheard of in my case and they love you and it’s all enchanting.”
