Kate Middleton is known for keeping in shape with regular exercise and ahealthy balanced diet, including her go-to lunch dish ofwatermelon salad.
So it came as a surprise when the Princess of Wales revealed during a recent chat with a 109-year-old nursing home resident that they shared a favourite food – kidneys.
The 41 year oldroyal was on a soloengagement at the Oxford Nursing Home in Slough when she got chatting to Nora, alongside her grandchildren Lynne and John.
Princess Kate was captured on film chatting to Nora, who celebrated her 109th birthday on 7 January, two days before Kate's birthday.
On learning of Nora's birthday, the royal exclaimed: “A fellow Capricorn!”
Kate then asked Nora what she liked to eat. After some prompting, the nursing home resident replied by saying kidneys and brussels sprouts.
Although kidneys are probably not a common food in many diets, Kate surprisingly said: “I love kidneys too!”
A popular meal containing the ingredient is devilled kidneys, a Victorian British breakfast dish consisting of lamb's kidneys cooked in a spiced sauce, referred to as "devilling". It has since become more frequently used as a supper-time dish.
Despite their appearance, kidneys have many nutritional benefits – including being regarded as an excellent source of protein, iron, vitamin B12 and omega fatty acids.
The Princess of Wales also tried her hand at making pancakes during the visit to the care home – though she was forced to apologise after it wenthorribly wrong.
Kate took part in the pancake making challenge alongside two of the care home's cooks.
However, it didn't go as well as planned as she struggled to free the batter mix from a frying pan.
Before she started, the princess predicted a culinary mishap, telling Anna Wright, head chef at Oxford House Nursing Home: “I always seem to get my pancakes stuck either in the pan or the ceiling or the floor.”
After pouring batter into a frying pan, Kate keenly watched it, spatula in hand.
She then said: “This is where I go wrong, I obviously try and turn them too quickly.”
After finally prising the pancake free, she held the frying pan with both hands and tossed the batter mix, to applause from the audience, before pointing at her efforts and saying: “Definitely don’t eat that one.”
During her visit to the nursing home, Kate heard about Oxford House’s use of technology to stimulate and enrich the daily lives of residents.
She also visited the home's award-winning garden, tried out an interactive football table with one resident called Jeaned and chatted to residents next to an interactive wall, which had a screen showing a train journey.
The facility looks after up to 34 residents, and also operates a domiciliary care organisation, Oxford House Community Care, which provides support to enable local residents to live independently in their own homes.
