Tony Robinson, 76, touched the hearts of many Great Christmas Bake Off viewers earlier tonight when he burst into tears after impressing the judges. The Time Team star was overcome with emotion when his turnip cake baubles granted him a “Hollywood handshake,” the term used for judge Paul Hollywood’s congratulatory handshakes.
Tony could not hold back the tears, admitting even he was “surprised” by his own reaction.
He went on to confess he was “overwhelmed” by Paul’s gesture as he quipped he would exchange his knighthood for one of his famous handshakes.
But Tony was not the only one pointing out the heartwarming moment, as fans took to Twitter to react to the scenes and even admitted to “crying” too.
Jenturnerhist tweeted: “Tony Robinson’s reaction to his handshake on the Christmas Bake Off has made my Christmas.”
MDHammond92 added: “Tony Robinson crying over cake turnips is the highlight of Christmas so far #BakeOff #GBBO”
“Watching Tony Robinson cry because he got a handshake on Bake Off? I am also crying,” said Rhiannon_C_LA.
Clothhwaltz penned: “Tony Robinson on Bake Off talking about Baldrick and his turnips I’m [crying emojis].”
“Bless Tony Robinson on Bake Off, his reaction to doing well is adorable,” Scripps235 typed.
The Christmas special comes after Tony revealed he is set to host a new batch of special Time Team episodes which will air on YouTube.
The presenter is set for a comeback on the archaeology hit show thanks to a self-funded new broadcast online.
Programme bosses have confirmed the exciting return of the actor-turned-TV host for a collection of new special programmes for their YouTube channel.
Tony was replaced by Dr Gus Casely-Hayford earlier this year, as the show moved to the online platform.
The long-running teatime show was a staple on Sunday nights for 17 years before being taken off air in 2011.
When asked about his return, the Blackadder actor said: “It’s fantastic to be back! Time Team is part of the family to me and this really feels like coming home.”
Discussing the new offerings, Tony continued: “I’ve loved watching the new episodes as a fan. Gus and the team are doing a fantastic job of continuing Time Team’s legacy.
“It’s wonderful to see the next generation taking up the torch and inspiring others with our shared passion for archaeology.”
He declared: “I look forward to catching up with old friends and making some new ones!”
The creator of the show and series producer Tim Taylor lauded the fresh instalments and told the press: “Wow, what an end to an incredible year for Time Team!
“We’re delighted that Tony has returned home to host the Specials documentaries, and we can’t wait to get started on our first new film together – hopefully the first of many!”
The specials will document some epic discoveries over the years for the official Time Team Official channel.
