TIPPING at a restaurant is a common, expected practice to show the staff that you appreciate their service.
People often debate what percentage is acceptable—should you leave 15% or 20%? Is 18% the golden number?
One man sparked a major debate online thanks to his approach to a restaurant bill.
In a TikTok posted by @Kaittwest, a man is seen leaving a $25 Amazon gift card in lieu of a cash tip.
The TikToker revealed that the total bill was $95.
Though the customer paid the amount in full, when it came time to add gratuity, he offered this unexpected substitution.
“He asked if he could tip with an Amazon gift card,” the TikToker said as she filmed the diner handing it over.
She captioned the clip: “Holidays left us #broke.”

She hilariously matched the video with the “Spongebob Sad Song Steel Lick” sound.
This exchange sent the internet into a divided frenzy.
While some believed the exchange to be a totally acceptable, even thoughtful, one, others thought it downright wrong:
“Such a Generous Fella! You can see his good intentions. Some people don’t even leave a penny. This young kid giving all he has. God bless brother,” one person commented.
“It’s more than a 20% tip. It’s actually really generous,” said another.
A third person had a hot take on the approach: “I would take it because we don’t have to pay tax on that. Haha.”
There were just as many viewers, however, on the other side of the debate:
“As a waitress no, I need bills paid not Amazon,” commented one.
“People really going out to eat when they don’t have any money huh,” added a second.
