I’m a midwife – what REALLY happens immediately after you give birth & the reason we give you tea and toast afterwards | The Sun

A MIDWIFE has opened up about what really happens after a woman has given birth, and why they always have tea and toast on standby for the new mums.

Midwife Millar, who is a mum to two boys herself, shared a detailed insight into how she and fellow hospital staff ensure their patient is safe and well following labour.

And the midwife, whose TikTok profile is @midwifebasini, said there were some important steps that she has to follow.

In a video, she explained that the very first thing new mums have to do is all to do with after birth.

She said: “You have the choice of having an injection to help speed up the delivery of your placenta.

“The injection to help deliver your placenta can make you feel sick, or vomit, and increases your blood pressure, but it does reduce the amount of blood you use.

I’m a mum-of-two and both my kids came out in two pushes with no tearing

“Your midwife can deliver your placenta by clamping the cord and applying pressure to the cord and pulling gently, or you can push your placenta out.”

While this is happening, the baby and bonding is also at the forefront of the midwife’s mind.

Midwife Millar continued to her social media 94.9k followers: “Your baby can be skin to skin with you at this point and also be helped to latch for a feed if you have chosen to breastfeed.”

And after the placenta has been delivered, it’s important for the staff to check “your perineum for any tears.”

She warned: “This can be slightly uncomfortable as you’ve just given birth, but you can use gas and air and it’s usually relatively quick.

“If there is a tear, then we will sort this quite quickly and numb you with local before we do it.

“Please don’t worry about the needle as most women don’t find that a problem and it’s usually the touch that can be a bit more sensitive.”

Once this is done – if needed – the hospital staff will do more observations to ensure that everything is ok, and that your blood pressure, pulse and temperature are normal.

The same will then be done for your new arrival, as they check them over, before weighing and measuring your baby.

The midwife went on to say: “They will get a more in depth check later on by either a doctor or midwife trained in a NIPE check, who will listen to their heart and take a closer look at their eyes.”

Once all necessary checks are carried out, your partner will also be offered skin to skin, but the midwife revealed that the next part is what she describes as “the real magic.”

She excitedly said: “Tea and toast!

“I like to offer an afternoon tea type scenario and will add sandwiches and cheese and biscuits if we have it as I think this is the celebratory meal.”

She added: “The tea and toast tradition that follows a birth is a celebration of the new life you just birthed – you did it.”
