King Felipe VI proposed to Queen Letizia in 2003 with a beautiful diamond ring, but the mother-of-two refused to wear it. Why?
Queen Letizia’s engagement ring features a white gold band and 16 princess-cut diamonds.
Gemologist at Prestige Pawnbrokers, Alexandra Michell, said it is “a very impressive full hoop diamond eternity ring set with princess-cut diamonds totalling approximately 5ct and set in platinum.”
“The diamonds in this ring are of exceptional colour and clarity and worth in excess of £35,000,” she explained.
The engagement ring is by Spanish jewellery brand Suárez and it features a stunning ‘diamond eternity’ design.
Queen Letizia wore the engagement ring until her wedding day and hasn’t seen wearing it ever since.
What is the reason behind her choice?
There is a theory behind the mystery of Queen Letizia’s engagement ring, which journalists Esteban Urreiztieta and Eduardo Inda unveiled in a royal biography.
However, this has never been confirmed by the Spanish royal house.
Journalists Urreiztieta and Inda explained that King Felipe sent his brother-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin, to collect the ring from the jewellery shop located in Barcelona.
Iñaki Urdangarin reportedly went to jewellery shop Suarez and paid for the ring which at that time cost 3,000 euros.
The journalists claimed the King’s brother-in-law paid using his company (Nóos) credit card.
Nóos was a private company Iñaki founded and the reason why he is currently in prison.
He was found guilty of tax fraud, embezzlement and influence peddling and sentenced to five years.
Although the royal journalists claimed this is the real reason why “Queen Letizia decided to return the ring to the shop”, it has never been confirmed by the royal family.
However, that is not the only jewel the monarch refuses to wear as Queen Letizia’s wedding ring hasn’t been seen in years.
Royal family insiders reported the Queen actually decided to stop wearing the jewel after it “injured her hand.”
Queen Letizia herself explained once that “the continuous handshakes at the receptions had injured her hand.”
Instead, the monarch always wears her Karen Hallam gold-plated ring, one of her favourite pieces.
However, this is not an unusual practice as many royals don’t wear their engagement or wedding rings, presumably for the same reason.
Prince William, for instance, is never seen wearing his wedding ring. The same happened with Prince Andrew, who never wore his ring when he was married to Sarah Ferguson.
