You may go into rest mode at night but while you’re sleeping, your skin is busy carrying a number of natural self-repair processes without having to deal with daytime factors such as UV light, pollutants and makeup. And a great way to maximise these processes is by applying one of the best night creams before you hit the sack.
There have been a number of smart skincare launches recently that claim to work wonders while you sleep, from reducing wrinkles in just 10 nights to actually making you sleep better.
To judge what REALLY works, we handed out some of these new night creams to our panel of Beauty Edit testers. We asked them to use the product as instructed for at least four weeks before noting down any changes in their skin.
Here are their honest thoughts…
Best anti-ageing night creams to shop in 2022
Best value night cream
Nivea Cellular Expert Lift Anti-Age Night Cream, £9.99 here
Containing plant-based retinol alternative bakuchiol to boost collagen and tackle wrinkles.
Beauty Edit tester Tracy says: “Great affordable product that feels luxurious (it reminded me of a high-end night cream). My skin felt nourished and hydrated each morning after using this. I didn't see much of a change in texture but was very happy with it feeling plumper, and I definitely had a glow. My partner noticed my skin looked more firmer and radiant. I would be happy swapping from my regular night cream to this.” 4/5
Best night cream for menopausal skin
Prai MenoGlow Super Hydrating Sleep Creme, £28 here
Designed for menopausal and perimenopausal skin and a favourite brand of TV presenter Lisa Snowdon, this hydrates without feeling heavy.
Beauty Edit tester Lisa W says: “I was initially sceptical about trying this as the consistency is lighter than my usual night creams and I didn’t think it would be hydrating enough. How wrong could I be! It is so light but so hydrating and my skin is silky smooth to the touch. I have even worn it under my foundation to give my skin a slight dewy look. It's now one of my favourite night creams and I will recommend this to my friends.” 5/5
Best night cream for fast results
L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Laser Retinol + Niacinamide Pressed Night Cream, £27.99 here
Combining two super ingredients into one cream, this claims to visibly reduce wrinkles in just 10 nights. (Build up slowly if you’re new to retinol though.)
Beauty Edit tester Claire says: “This is fabulous! It sinks right into the skin and leaves it feeling soft and comforted. I’m in my early 40s and fine lines had started appearing, which were knocking my self confidence. I noticed results after 10 nights and after using this for a month, my lines are less noticeable, especially around my eye area, and my skin looks brighter and more hydrated. My husband said my face looked smoother and glowing. It's a little pot of magic.” 5/5
Best overnight oil
SkinSense Hydranet Midnight Oil Concentrate, £30 here
An intensely hydrating blend of oils combined with a relaxing scent of lavender and ylang ylang.
Beauty Edit tester Lisa S says: “I was a little apprehensive about using a face oil as I haven't used one before…but wow! My skin definitely felt like it had had an injection of moisture and TLC, and seemed plumper, more radiant and glowing. My mum said my skin looks great. It's a pleasure to use, smells fantastic and nourishes my skin. What's not to love?” 5/5
Best lightweight night cream
Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Omega-Rich Cloud Cream, £41 here
A lightweight, whipped formula infused with skin-plumping fatty acids and botanicals.
Beauty Edit tester Lisa M says: “This wasn't greasy like some creams I have used and didn't run into my eyes. When I woke in the mornings my face looked smoother, firmer and more nourished, and I loved the way it made my skin glow. I will continue to use this as I felt it made a difference to my skin. I even seem to sleep better when I use it, which must be thanks to the lavender scent.” 5/5
Best night cream for firming
Elizabeth Arden Advanced Ceramide Lift and Firm Night Cream, £68 here
A rich formula containing ceramides, tetrapeptides and edelweiss extract to lift and define facial contours.
Beauty Edit tester Harpreet says: “My skin was really moisturised after using this product, and I woke up in the morning to soft, smooth, supple skin. Usually my skin is rather dry and tight in the mornings but since using this cream that is not the case. Fine lines by my mouth have reduced significantly – and I was searching for something to help me with that. I felt my cheeks have also lifted and feel firmer.” 5/5
Best night cream scent
M&S Apothecary Revive Overnight Recovery Cream, £19.50 here
Combining hydrating actives with soothing essential oils to soothe your senses as well as your skin.
Beauty Edit tester Sara says: “This cream smells so lovely – very relaxing. Even though it feels lightweight it hydrates skin very well and leaves it feeling comfortable, soothed and pampered. After using this for a month, my skin looks plumper and fine lines look less obvious. It’s a pleasure to use every evening, and as good as a lot of much more expensive night creams I have tried. This cream has the wow factor for me.” 5/5
