If you’ve been anywhere near the internet in the last 48 hours, you will have seen that the first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s new Barbie film has dropped, and everyone is going absolutely wild for it.
From the star studded cast to the bright colours and attention to detail – like the fact Margot Robbie’s foot stays in the iconic Barbie pose when she removes her heels – there is plenty that has gotten people talking about the new film ahead of its July release. However, there’s another thing that fans can’t get enough of, and it’s the major beauty transformation that some of the cast have undergone to portray the dolls from Barbie world.
The cast features an extensive list of impressive names, including Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, while different versions of Barbie are played by big names including Dua Lipa, Kaye McKinnon, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, Ana Cruz Kayne, and Sharon Rooney. Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa play variations of Ken, whilst Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, Connor Swindells and Michael Cera all also have important roles.
Plenty of the cast have been Barbie-fied for the movie, from Margot Robbie’s big hair to Dua Lipa’s long blue lengths; here are some of the best transformations from the Barbie movie we've seen so far.

Margot Robbie’s big hair
It looks like Margot Robbie was the perfect choice to play the iconic doll, and her platinum tresses are ideal for replicating the original Barbie’s trademark white blonde hair. Although her hair colour hasn’t changed much, Margot’s styling has.
Apart from her all-pink outfits (another Barbie must-have), the actress’ hair can be seen teased into big, voluminous styles throughout the trailer, including a 60s inspired beehive and extra long curled extensions with a short side fringe. Renowned makeup artist, hairdresser and prosthetist, Robb Crafer, was responsible for Margot’s transformation, making sure she had super long blonde locks and bright pink lips that are synonymous with the Mattel doll.
Dua Lipa’s long blue lengths
Dua Lipa was a surprise casting announcement, and it was revealed she would be playing mermaid Barbie. Although a metallic mermaid tail is a pretty big transformation in itself, it was her long blue locks that got people talking.
The singer appears in her teaser image under the caption “This Barbie is a mermaid”, with a metallic blue bandeau top and tail, styled with blue eyeshadow and oversize pearl jewellery. In the image, her bright royal blue hair falls in loose curls right down to her hips, making it a dramatic departure from her previous hair looks, which have included both platinum blonde and jet black colours styled in either long waves or a short blunt bob.
Hari Nef’s auburn beehive
Hari Nef is typically a fan of much edgier cuts when it comes to her hair, and is usually seen sporting a dark, wavy, blunt bob with curtain bangs. However, for her role as ‘Doctor Barbie’, Hari has ditched her dark tones for a bright auburn colour with long extensions.
Shown in her teaser image wearing a pink metallic dress with a very oversized bow, Hari’s long locks are styled into a beehive, with a centre parting and loose front sections tucked behind her ear. The style was accessorised with pink flower hair clips, proving Doctor Barbie doesn’t have to stay away from pink sparkles.
Issa Rae’s long dark curls
Never one to shy away from experimenting with her hair, Issa Rae has had everything from waist-length braids to embracing her natural texture with a short Afro, and for her role in Barbie, she can be seen rocking glossy chest-length tight curls for her latest look.
Appearing under the caption “This Barbie is President”, Issa has nailed the doll’s stiff handed wave as she beams at the camera wearing a pink and gold glittery dress and pink sash with the word ‘President’ emblazoned on it in the gold Barbie font. Her long dark curls are tightly wound and glossy, falling just past her chest with a centre parting.
Kate McKinnon’s edgy pink spikes
Saturday Night Live star and comedian Kate McKinnon’s teaser image bares the words “This Barbie is always in the splits”, and it’s safe to say we expect Kate’s character to be depicting a Barbie that has been ‘customised’ by it’s owner, with the tagline referring to a move Barbie fan will remember trying out on their own dolls.
Kate’s Barbie appears to be sporting some pretty edgy extra short spiky hair, which has been dyed a pastel pink colour with hints of purple after receiving what we assume is a DIY haircut and colour from the doll’s owner. In her teaser image, Kate is also wearing a rather chaotic outfit of lime green snakeskin boots and neon pink colourful tutu dress, with random colourful squiggles drawn all over her face – another nod to the mayhem inflicted on some Barbies when trying to customise them.
