The Lumière festival, an annual celebration of heritage cinema and cult filmmakers spearheaded by Cannes’ chief Thierry Fremaux, has unveiled the dates of its 13th edition on Oct. 9-17.
The 10-day festival takes place in Lyon, the birthplace of the cinema where the first film in history was shot by the Lumiere brothers. The festival was created in 2009 by late French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier and Fremaux to “celebrate this extraordinary heritage and herald its place of origin as a paramount region of world cinephilia,” said the event’s organizers, who had managed to host the fest as a live event last October in the midst of the pandemic.
This 2021 edition will likely pay homage to Tavernier, with whom Fremaux formed a duo for decades until his passing in May, and headed the Lumiere Insitute, a central cultural venue in Lyon.
Over the last decade, the festival has welcomed over one million festivalgoers and has been luring an impressive roster of filmmakers, actors and artists, including Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood and Catherine Deneuve who received the Lumière Award, a grand prize paying tribute to their career and achievements. As part of their tributes, filmmakers and stars often participate in masterclasses and present films of their choice.
Once again this year, the festival will work with local cinemas in Lyon and will highlight classics, as well as select contemporary films, some of which will have world premiered at Cannes, in the Official Selection.
The 13th recipient of the Lumière Award, as well as the guests of honour and full line-up will be unveiled soon. The 9th edition of the Classic Film Market, a industry event dedicated to the sales, programming and acquisitions of heritage movies, will take place Oct. 12-15.
