Congratulations are in order for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry after they announced the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

The couple shared the news with the world on Sunday, two days after the baby girl was born weighing 7lb 11oz at a hospital in LA.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to wait to tell the world their news broke royal tradition for the second time.

When their son Archie was born in May 2019, Meghan and Harry announced the news hours after the Duchess had given birth at the Portland Hospital in London.

In contrast, the Palace informed the world the moment that Meghan’s sister in law Kate Middleton went into labour for each of her three children’s births.

Traditionally, all royal babies were born at home until Princess Diana broke the tradition and gave birth to William at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital.

Kate followed suit and has welcomed Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at the private hospital.

Meanwhile, while it was rumoured she’d given birth at Frogmore Cottage, Meghan gave birth to Archie at London’s Portland Hospital, where a private birth costs around £15,0000.

Its celebrity clientele includes Victoria Beckham and, more recently, Love Island winner Dani Dyer.

Archie’s arrival appeared on Instagram before it was even announced at the royal gates.

Following the couple’s relocation to the US this time around, Lilibet was born at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, near to their nine-bedroom mansion in Montecito, Santa Barbara.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor will be eighth in line to the throne.

The first seven places remain unchanged – the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Harry, and Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

It’s believed that royal fans could be waiting a while before catching a glimpse of the new baby, as Meghan and Harry are now under no pressure to share one following their departure as senior members of the royal family.

Their statement this weekend read: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.

"She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.

"This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."
