Which burns more: those inked-on flames or Jennifer Lopez’s scorching criticism?
Following J.Lo’s reunion with former fiancé Ben Affleck, fans are resurfacing a 2016 interview during which she slammed his notorious back tattoo of a phoenix rising from flames.
“It’s awful!” Lopez said on “Watch What Happens Live” at the time, when asked about her then-former flame’s flaming design.
“And I would tell him that,” she added. “What are you doing? It has too many colors! His tattoos always have too many colors. They shouldn’t be so colorful, you know what I mean? They should be, like, cooler.”
Affleck debuted the much-maligned ink back in 2015, amid his split from ex-wife Jennifer Garner. While he first fibbed that it was fake, he’s since defended the ink, acknowledging that the public reaction was “not so much positive.”
“It represents something very important to me. It’s meaningful to me,” he said on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2019. “I like it. It’s something that I sort of kept private … I love my tattoo. I’m very happy with it.”
With Lopez, 52, and Affleck, 48, rekindling their romance this spring – and even going Instagram-official during her birthday trip this weekend – fans are wondering whether Affleck will join stars like Pete Davidson in seeking out tattoo removal services.
“JLo is going to get Ben Affleck to remove that back tattoo of his. I’m happy for him,” tweeted one.
Added another, “I bet JLo makes Ben keep his shirt on at all times, she does not have the patience for that trash tattoo.”
Affleck did appear to keep his T-shirt on during their PDA-packed Saint-Tropez getaway, but that didn’t hold him back from recreating a sexy scene from Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” video by going in for a booty grab.
It seems the “Dinero” singer has found a way to look past Affleck’s body art, as she even paid tribute to her on-again beau by wearing a “Ben” necklace in Monaco on Monday.
But if she chooses to criticize his back tattoo again, many stars would certainly have her back.
Garner, to whom the actor was married to from 2005 to 2015, expressed her disapproval of his huge tattoo in 2016, telling Vanity Fair, “You know what we would say in my hometown about that? ‘Bless his heart.’”
Continued the 49-year-old actress, “A phoenix rising from the ashes. Am I the ashes in this scenario? I take umbrage. I refuse to be the ashes.”
Even Affleck’s best friend Matt Damon — who recently expressed excitement over Bennifer’s reunion — has publicly poked fun at the ink, although he did jokingly admit, “It’s not one man’s job to tell another man what he can do to his back.”
