Covid restrictions for the last two years have meant London’s famed New Year’s Eve fireworks haven’t gone off with quite as big of a bang compared to previous years. But now Covid restrictions have lifted, people will be able to gather in the capital this year to celebrate the start of 2023.

Is London doing New Year’s Eve fireworks this year?

This year there will be a fireworks display in London, starting at 8pm on New Year’s Eve with fireworks kicking off at 12am and finishing around 12.30am on New Year’s Day.

But people are advised that they should not come to the event in person unless they have a ticket for entry.

All tickets for the London New Year’s Eve tickets have sold out at the time of writing.

Where are the London fireworks viewing areas?

There are six different ticketed viewing areas: Blue, Red, Pink, Green and White, plus an Accessible Viewing Area (Orange).

There are specific entry points for each viewing area which will be printed on tickets.

The Blue Area encompasses the stretch of Victoria Embankment from Westminster Bridge to Embankment Underground station.

The Red Area covers the stretch of Victoria Embankment from Embankment Tube to Temple Avenue.

The Pink Area covers Waterloo Bridge, while the Green Area covers the area behind the London Eye.

The White Area is located at Westminster Bridge, and the Orange Area covers Albert Embankment, riverside of St. Thomas’ Hospital, with access from the south side of the river only.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks will be London’s “best ever”.

Mr Khan said: “I’m incredibly excited that Londoners and visitors to our capital can once again unite on the banks of the Thames to welcome in the new year by watching our world-famous fireworks.

“We are building a better London for everyone and New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights of the year for our hospitality industry with our fireworks providing an incredible moment to send a message of love and celebration to the world.

“This year will be our best ever and with the first batch of tickets selling out in just over five hours, I urge anyone wanting to attend to book as early as possible.”

Tickets were on sale for £15 each via the See Tickets website.

Where else can you watch the London fireworks?

The Evening Standard highlighted some of the best spots in the capital to catch all the firework action, including Cannon Street and Primrose Hill.

There is also the Millenium Bridge and Southwark Bridge, not to mention Vauxhall Bridge and Lambeth Bridge.

Greenwich Park also offers spectacular views of the proceedings, as does Alexandra Palace and Hampstead Heath.

How to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks at home

Many will crowd along the River Thames or in parks to watch the fireworks light up central London, but luckily you can also watch them from the comfort of your own home.

Eurovision star Sam Ryder and other music stars will be taking part in a New Year’s Eve party from 11.30pm on BBC1.

After the fireworks are broadcast to the nation, Sam will be back on the channel with Sam Ryder’s All Star New Year’s Eve Part 2.

Jools Holland will be back with Jools’ Annual Hootenanny on BBC2 from 11.30pm on New Year’s Eve too.
