Masks to keep your Jeck* in check: *That’s the jowl, jaw and neck area damaged by bad WFH habits
- The fleshy area around our jawlines, jowls and neck is referred to as the ‘jeck’
- Google has 160 per cent rise in searches for treatments to rejuvenate the area
- Donna Francis puts a selection of the latest home treatments to the test
Anybody who has spent the past 14 months working from home, participating in endless Zoom conferences, may well have become self-conscious about their ‘jeck’.
For those unfamiliar with the phrase, ‘jeck’ is the fleshy area around our jawlines, jowls and neck.
Forced to look at our faces for hours on end, is it any wonder that Google has seen a 160 per cent rise in searches for treatments to rejuvenate the area.
Consultant dermatologist Dr Justine Kluk says: ‘Working from home routines that rely on muscles in the lower face, jaw or neck, such as tilting the head down to look at devices will accentuate jowls.’

So is it possible to reverse the ravages on our faces and necks due to the lifestyle the pandemic has forced upon us, while avoiding costly treatments such as lower-face fillers and skin-tightening lasers?
Facial expert Abigail James says: ‘The new “jeck” masks can help to boost hydration which will temporarily plump out fine lines and reduce that crepey look your skin and decolletage often suffers from.
‘Home devices using LED light technology work well too as they are scientifically proven to boost collagen — the stuff that helps to firm and lift the area.’
Here’s what happened when I put my jeck on the line to test some of the latest treatments . . .
FOR AN INSTANT BOOST
Wishful Chin Lift Sculpting Sheet Mask, £8 each, boots.com
A thick cotton-fabric mask that hooks over your ears to cup and lift your jawline in a sling-like style. The hydrogel inside layer is infused with niacinamide (vitamin B3), hydrating peptides, and peppermint.
The fabric feels like a sports bandage and makes your chin feel lifted and swaddled like a baby. As it felt so comfortable and cooling, I left it on for way longer than for the 30 minutes the packaging advised.
Verdict: My husband couldn’t spot the difference, but I noticed my jowls looked lifted and my face looked slimmer and more toned. 4/5
FOR LASTING RESULTS
CurrentBody Skin Neck & Dec Perfector, £375, currentbody.com
Donna said an age spot on her chest began to fade after two weeks of using CurrentBody Skin Neck & Dec Perfector (pictured)
A chargeable LED device that shapes and fits around your neck and decolletage. It uses red LED lights to stimulate collagen and infrared to trigger the renewal of skin cells.
Even though it looked daunting to set up, it turned out to be easy to use, feeling light and snug. One band sits around your neck like a choker, while a second section lays across the decolletage. I wore it daily just after my morning shower as it works best on clean, dry skin.
Verdict: Pricey but the science behind red light therapy makes it worth the investment. I noticed a big age spot on my chest began to fade after two weeks’ use, even though the best results come after using it for a month, at least three times a week. This is in my routine for the foreseeable. 5/5
FOR AN ALL OVER GLOW
Shiseido Vital Perfection LiftDefine Radiance Facemask, £79.05 for six, johnlewis.com.
Donna said Shiseido Vital Perfection LiftDefine Radiance Facemask (pictured) left her skin feeling nourished and glowing
A two-part sheet mask for your face and jaw-line, it’s enriched with ingredients that promise to brighten skin, smooth out wrinkles and lift and tighten the jowl area. It’s tricky to apply as you have to place the face mask on first and then fix the chin-sling over the top by hooking it round your ears. But once on, it felt lovely on the skin. It’s infused with lots of serum, so your skin gets a real hit of moisture during the ten minute application.
Verdict: My skin was left nourished and glowing, but I didn’t see any difference with my jawline. Overall, it’s too expensive and doesn’t deliver on the lifting promise. 2/5
A QUICK FIX FOR NECK CRINKLES
Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Neck Gels, £35 for four, feelunique.com
Donna said Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Neck Gels (pictured) provides a quick fix for smoothing neck lines
A single-use gel patch sealed with firming and smoothing ingredients like niacinamide — to boost skin cell turnover and circulation — and collagen to firm and smooth out creases in the neck area.
The neck wrap stuck to my skin so well that I could wear it around the house. The hydrogel felt instantly cooling, and while it’s not drowning in product, it went where it needed to go.
Verdict: If you’re looking for a quick fix to smooth away those ugly deep horizontal neck lines then this is great. But the results won’t last for more than a couple of hours. 3/5
