Maureen Lipman is an English theatre, film, radio, and TV actor, writer, and political activist. She has appeared in a slew of small and big screen productions, and one of her biggest current roles is playing Evelyn Plummer, mum of Cassandra and grandmother to Tyrone Dobbs, on Coronation Street.

Maureen is a household name in the British arts and culture scene.

Her Coronation Street character has had a gripping storyline since the actor first appeared on the show in 2018.

Thanks to Maureen’s work on the soap, as well as on other TV programmes and films, the 75-year-old has an impressive sum in the bank.

The actor has a net worth of around $1.5million, according to celebrity sites.

This is currently equivalent to around £1million.

Maureen’s childhood was worlds away from her lifestyle now.

Born in Hull, she attended Newland School for Girls and became interested in performing at a young age.

Encouraged to pursue a career in acting by her mother, Maureen trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Maureen began her acting career in theatre, becoming a member of Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company at the Old Vic in 1971 and of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1973.

As for TV, the actor appeared in the sitcoms The Lovers, Doctor at Large, The Evacuees, and Agony, among others, before landing a role on Coronation Street in 2002.

She played snooty landlady Lillian Spencer for only six episodes, before rejoining the cast in 2018 as one of the show’s main characters, Evelyn Plummer.

Maureen took a short break from the show earlier this year to grieve the death of her partner, Guido Castro, who passed away at 84 years of age in January 2021.

The couple were together for 13 years.

Before Guido, Maureen was married to Jack Rosenthal until his death in 2004.

The pair wed in 1974 and have two children, Amy and Adam.

Between her two Coronation Street roles, Maureen appeared in a string of other TV programmes, including The Fugitives, Jonathan Creek, The Wire, and Doctor Who.

The actor also made a guest appearance in Casualty and Holby City.

Additionally, she has participated in The News Quiz, Have I Got News For You, and Comic Relief Does The Apprentice.

Maureen has also tried her hand at big screen productions, playing the role of the title character’s mother in Roman Polanski’s 2002 film The Pianist.

As a writer, Maureen completed her former husband’s autobiography By Jack Rosenthal after his death, and she wrote a monthly column for Good Housekeeping magazine for over ten years.

Last year, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Maureen was awarded a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
