Piers Morgan boasted Thursday that his former TV show “Good Morning Britain” beat its competitor in the ratings on his final episode — amid controversy over his comments about Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Morgan, 55 — who exited the show after a heated on-air clash with a co-star over his criticism of the Duchess of Sussex Tuesday — said the number of viewers who tuned into the program that day finally surpassed its on-air rival “BBC Breakfast.”
“I had one goal when I joined @GMB- beat @BBCBreakfast in the ratings. On my last day, we did it. That was down to the hard work & dedication of the whole team. They don’t all agree with me, some don’t even like me, but we were a team..and we won. Thanks guys. I’ll miss you,” Morgan tweeted.
A total of 1.29 million viewers watched Morgan’s final episode — which included his now infamous dispute with the show’s weatherman, Alex Beresford, Deadline Deadline reported.
The episode may be the ITV show’s best ratings since it launched in April 2014, Deadline reported.
During the show, Morgan stormed off set while live on air after Beresford confronted him about his claim that Markle exaggerated her struggles with the royal family in the tell-all sit-down with Winfrey.
Beresford challenged Morgan over why he’d frequently attacked Markle in the past — hinting that he may have a personal vendetta against her, and calling his behavior “diabolical.”
“I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle. You’ve made it so clear a number of times on this program, and I understand that you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off,” Beresford said. “Has she said anything about you after she cut you off? She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. And yet you continue to trash her.”
Morgan then walked off stage in a huff, and later announced he will leave the show.
