Across the country, women of a certain age are ditching their hair dye and wearing their silver locks proudly.

But Queen Consort Camilla is unlikely to embrace going grey any time soon if her colourist, Jo Hansford, has anything to do with it.

Ms Hansford, who has worked with Camilla for 35 years, disapproves of grey hair, claiming it’s ‘mumsy’ and changes how you are treated by people.

The businesswoman, whose clients have also included Angelina Jolie, Elizabeth Hurley and Richard Burton, told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour: ‘I hate grey.

‘You don’t need to be grey any more. We have the best products in the world now. You can look beautiful and much younger, ten years younger, if you don’t have grey hair.’

She claimed only ‘very glamorous’ people with a ‘sharp haircut’ and ‘beautiful silver white hair’ can carry off the look.

Otherwise, she said, grey hair looks ‘mumsy’.

She added: ‘People look at you in a different way. They talk to you in a different way… like you’re an old person.’

Ms Hansford runs a team of 90 across two salons in west London, one in Mayfair and another at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, which is also home to a blow dry bar. She was made an MBE in 2010 for outstanding service to the hairdressing industry.

Referring to the Coronation, she said Camilla would look her best – but worried about how the crown might affect her hair.

She added: ‘I think she’ll look gorgeous.

‘I think she’s nervous, like any other person would be nervous, but I’m sure her hair will look the same as it always does, and it does look good now.

‘In photos it looks so much better, the colour, because it’s softer and warmer.

‘The difficulty will be putting the crown on without changing the style. How that happens I don’t know. I won’t be there – I’ll be watching it on the telly.’
