A waitress was left shocked when one of her customers refused to leave her a tip and even scrawled a furious note on the receipt after she asked an innocent question.
The waitress, who works in the US, had been serving an older man who was with a woman who looked "much younger" than him and asked them if they wanted to split their $65.80 bill at the end of their meal.
It turns out the couple were married and they opted to pay the bill all together — but when she returned to take payment, the waitress discovered the man was furious as he branded her "rude" and told her she wouldn't be getting a tip in a note left on the bill.

Sharing a picture of the receipt to Reddit, the waitress revealed the man had scribbled down: "No tip because it was very rude to ask my wife and I if we wanted separate checks???"
She added: "He had the audacity to write this with my pen."
The waitress wasn't sure the man and woman were a couple because he appeared to be in his "late 50s, early 60s, and she was much younger".
But she claimed this isn't why she asked them about separate bills, revealing the restaurant she works at requires workers to ask everyone the same question.
The post was flooded with more than 1,000 comments but opinion was split on who was in the wrong.
Some agreed with the customer for getting offended, one person wrote: "To be honest, why the f*** would you unprompted ask if they wanted separate checks? I would withhold a tip for you making assumptions as well."
Another commented: "I mean that is pretty rude of you lol. Also stop expecting people who aren’t your boss to provide your income."
Others slammed the US tipping culture altogether.
"It's still okay because tipping slavery needs to f***ing stop," one person said.
A second wrote: "Imagine if restaurants paid their employees and they didn’t have to rely on the kindness of asshats."
But lots of others sympathised with the waitress as they were left baffled by the man's reaction.
"How the f*** are you supposed to know? I've seen folks that look married that were brother and sister both with wedding bands," one person pointed out.
Another commented: "So, his wife is out of his league and he’s an insecure cheapskate piece of trash?"
Some even suspected the bloke was just looking for any excuse not to tip.
"He's just cheap and looking for an excuse to ditch the tip," one person said.
Further defending herself, the waitress explained her restaurant put the policy in place because on another occasion a customer was left furious when they weren't asked if they wanted to split the bill.
She said: "At my job we are supposed to ask if it's separate checks, not assume they are together. We had a couple and some kids come in to eat once. The server brought out one check and the woman started freaking out because the server assumed that her and the man were still together.
"She was going on and on about how just because they look like a family doesn't mean that they're one check. That is why we ask because we want to prevent that situation from happening again."
She revealed asking about separate bills isn't the only time she's been refused a tip for an odd reason.
Recalling another incident, she added: "I’ve had a no tip with the reason being 'lemonade was too tart' sorry?????? blame it on the person who had teas and lemonade as their sidework damn."
