A tackle in the European Football League as left football fans divided on social media over its legal and ethical legitimacy.

During a semifinal between the Frankfurt Galaxy and the Rheim Fire across the Atlantic, one player made a particularly violent move to bring his opponent down.

During the third quarter of the clash with 12:26 remaining, Frankfurt linebacker Wael Nasri made a tackle by tanking the hair of his opponent who was making a charge towards to the 20-yard line.

The tackle sparked a brawl with Rheim players taking exception with the controversial move, before officials intervened.

But the tackle hasn’t just caused disagreement on the field but also on social media where football fans back in the United States debated the legality of the maneuver.

Some social media users insisted the tackle was legal as the hair is part of the uniform

Other slammed the maneuver, insisting even if it was legal it was morally right

Many were quick to point out that technically the tackle was legal as hair outside of the helmet is considered part of a players’ uniform and therefore acceptable to grab on to.

‘Yup, hair becomes part of the uniform,’ one social media responded to a clip of the tackle.

Another echoed their argument, adding: ‘This is legal. The hair is considered apart of the uniform.’

One football coach even chimed in as he conceded that it was legal but advised players to tuck their hair in to avoid it being used to tackle them.

‘It’s completely legal as a coach I wanted my son & players to have their hair braided & tucked in the helmet as well as the jersey tucked in,’ he posted. ‘Anything u can grab except the face mask is legal.’

‘Sadly yes this has always been legal,’ another admitted, albeit begrudgingly.

However, others, while they admitted it was technically legal, insisted that it wasn’t morally right for a player to do.

‘Yes, but that doesn’t make it right,’ one person wrote in response to the original post questioning the validity of the move.

‘Ethically, no. But if there is no rule against it, yes,’ another conceded.

Some social media users took a stronger stance as they were left outraged by the tackle, calling for it to be banned.

‘If this is leagal [sic], make it ILLEGAL IMMEDIATELY, I’m so sick of people pulling hair, especially braids/locs,’ one football fan fumed.

‘It’s legal but it’s definitely some s*** you shouldn’t do,’ another insisted, while others swiftly shutdown the argument with posts of, ‘Straight up dirty,’ and, ‘Hell no!’

Another seemed to suggest the tackle and the subsequent controversy it triggered would lead to the NFL banning long hair.

They shared: ‘aaand just like that, long hair banned in the NFL.’
